Three cases with innovative solutions to combat the coronavirus presented by Brazilian entrepreneurs set the tone, on April 30, at the virtual round table “IP Day at UFRJ in Covid-19 times”, an event celebrating World Property Day Intellectual and that is part of the series of events Encounters in the UFRJ Park. The event was promoted by the Technology Park, the Innovation Agency of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property (ABPI).
The round medal was divided into two stages. The first, mediated by ABPI president Luiz Edgard Montaury Pimenta, was marked by the presentation of the cases. The company Biotecam, a company incubated by Coppe / UFRJ that develops technologies for the environmental area, highlighted its patent, already required, related to equipment that removes infected air in closed environments and that can be used to sterilize field hospitals.
Then, Jurandir Nadal, professor at the Biomedical Engineering Program at Coppe / UFRJ, showed the project, already in the testing phase, of the exception lung ventilator for patients with Covid-19, developed by UFRJ in collaboration with the companies Petrobras and Whirlpool and financial support from Faperj.
João Bruno Valentim, from the Senai Innovation Institute, in turn, explained that, in partnership with Klabin, the institution improved the production of a substitute for carbocol, an input used in the formulation of alcohol in gel, which is scarce. This new formulation, already protected by patent and in high availability in the market, is made based on ethanol, water, cellulose nanofibers and propylene glycol.
And finally, Cristina D’Urso, head of INPI’s studies and projects division and responsible for INPI’s COVID-19 Observatory project, spoke about the wealth of material and information on patents required / granted in Brazil and abroad regarding solutions for the treatment of COVID-19.
The second stage of the event, mediated by the deputy director of the National Faculty of Law, Kone Cesário, brought ABPI’s counselor Renata Lisboa into a heated debate; Marco Krieger, Vice President of Production and Innovation in Health at Fiocruz; and Lia Hasenclever, economist and retired professor at UFRJ.
The event was supported by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Brazilian Association of Industrial Property Agents (ABAPI) and the National Faculty of Law (FND).
