After 14 qualifying rounds, semi-finals and final clash, all in a virtual environment, which began last Saturday, 3/7, and ended on Sunday, 4/7, the 1st edition of the CSD-ABPI Moot – Arbitration Competition in Intellectual Property fulfilled its main objectives, evaluated the president of the Center for Dispute Resolution at ABPI (CSD-ABPI), Manoel J. Pereira dos Santos. “What we intended was to encourage the use of arbitration in intellectual property, publicize the CSD-ABPI and train professionals to act in the arbitration of Intellectual Property issues,” he said. “We believe that the event was a success and we are going to make other editions”, he added.
The team from the Gusmão & Labrunie Advogados office was the big winner of the competition, which had more than 250 people involved, including competitors, advisors, referees and listeners – all members of the winning team were awarded a year of free association with the ABPI . “We were impressed to have won, as we are all newcomers to competitions of this type,” said lawyer Guilherme Della Guardia Pires, from the winning team. For him, essential in the victory was the joining of forces between the team’s advisors, one with a more technical profile in refereeing and the other in IP. “But we study a lot to prepare for the competition,” he said.
Second place went to the team from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The best speaker at the competition was Isadora Ozelim Michelotto, from Mattos Filho, who was also awarded a free year of membership. Victor Dreyssig Kronemberger, from Danneman Siemsen, took the position of second best speaker, and Thomaz Patrão de Aquino, from Mattos Filho, was considered the third best speaker.
There were 14 teams registered, representing renowned universities and law firms, totaling 116 members and advisors. Two teams participated per round, with two speakers each and three referees. The panels simulated an arbitration hearing, having as object a fictitious case created by the Organizing Committee, involving several current and relevant aspects and issues related to Intellectual Property.
On Sunday morning, in the two elimination rounds, two finalists were selected for the final round, which started at 3:00 pm and ended around 6:00 pm, with the announcement of the winners and the closing of the event. All sessions were open to competitors and listeners. “The panels showed the high level of the competitors, who spent months studying the case and preparing themselves”, said Vinícius Pavan Lessa Silva, Executive Secretary of CSD-ABPI, who has participated in several arbitration competitions and was a member of the event’s Organizing Committee.
The only one of its kind with an exclusive focus on IP arbitration, the 1st CSD-ABPI Moot sought to train and educate law students and young lawyers on the practice of arbitration in intellectual property. The competition was conceived along the lines of renowned tournaments of the genre, such as the CAMARB Brazilian Arbitration Competition, the Willem C. Vis Moot and the Oxford Intellectual Property Law Moot.
